<p><strong>Myopia</strong>, commonly referred to as short- or near-sightedness, is one of the most prevalent refractive vision conditions, especially among children and young adults. The term is derived from the Greek word <em>muopia</em>, meaning “to close the eyes.” This reflects the tendency of those with myopia to squint in order to see more clearly at a distance.</p>

<p>Myopia occurs when the eye&#8217;s shape causes light rays from distant objects to focus <strong>in front of the retina</strong> instead of directly on it. This results in <strong>blurred distance vision</strong>, while near vision often remains clear. It is typically corrected with <strong>minus power (concave) lenses</strong>, either in the form of spectacles, contact lenses, or via corneal reshaping procedures that reduce the eye’s refractive power.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Causes and Refractive Nature</strong></h2>



<p>Medically, myopia is the refractive condition where the <strong>conjugate focus of the retina lies in front of the eye</strong> when no accommodation (focusing effort) is occurring. Essentially, even when the eye is relaxed, parallel light rays from faraway objects are brought to focus before reaching the retina, leading to a blurred image.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Signs and Symptoms of Myopia</strong></h2>



<p>The most common and noticeable symptom is <strong>blurred distance vision</strong>. Depending on the type of myopia, this blur may be consistent or vary depending on lighting conditions:</p>

<li><strong>Simple and Degenerative Myopia:</strong> Constant distance blur</li>



<li><strong>Nocturnal Myopia:</strong> Distance vision is only blurred in low-light or dark environments</li>

<p>As a result of a sporting accident, a contact lens migrated into a Scottish woman’s eyelid and remained there for 28 years.</p>



<p>When a 14-year-old Scottish girl was hit in the face by a shuttlecock, while playing badminton, she thought the contact lens in her left eye had simply fallen out during the impact.</p>



<p>The doctors who examined her, came to the same conclusion.</p>



<p>But almost 30 years later, medical personnel were shocked to discover the lens had actually lodged itself in her eye and had been stuck there for the past 28 years.</p>



<p>The case of the woman, who is now 42 years old and prefers to remain anonymous, was recently reported in&nbsp;<a href="http://casereports.bmj.com/content/2018/bcr-2018-225767.abstract?sid=2e45ca19-b8fe-4d6c-b19d-ccc60dcb7d84" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>BMJ Case Reports</em></a>.</p>

<p>According to the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-6055059/Doctors-remove-contact-lens-inside-42-year-old-womans-eyelid-cyst.html" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-6055059/Doctors-remove-contact-lens-inside-42-year-old-womans-eyelid-cyst.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Daily Mail</em></a>, the lens came to light after the patient complained to her GP of swelling in her left upper eyelid.</p>



<p>According to researchers, The MRI reported a cyst with proteinaceous content. Proteinaceous refers to the presence of a protein substance.</p>



<p>“On surgical excision of the cyst, a rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lens was found. The RGP lens was encapsulated within the upper eyelid soft tissue,” researchers stated.</p>

<p>The surgeons noted there have been four other reported cases of&nbsp;contact lens migration, because of trauma to the eye.</p>



<p>“This case report exhibits the longest time between traumatic RGP lens migration into the eyelid and presentation of eyelid swelling,” they&nbsp;wrote.</p>



<p>Doctors speculate this must be the lens that was the residue of the childhood accident.</p>



<p>“It can be inferred, that the lens migrated into the eyelid and resided there asymptomatically for 28 years.”</p>



<p>The patient has since then been released from hospital and has made a full recovery.</p>
